AI is already deeply embedded in how today's college students learn and work — 94% report having used AI at least once, and the share using it daily has nearly tripled in less than a year. But as universities begin exploring AI for student affairs and academic advising, a crucial question emerges: do students actually want it there? We surveyed over 3,200 college students to find out. The results might surprise you.
Students don't just accept AI in advising — they expect it
Today's students have grown up with personalized, on-demand digital experiences, and they bring those expectations to campus. In our survey, students with prior AI experience showed a strong positive correlation between familiarity and enthusiasm for AI-driven advising. The most frequently cited benefit? Round-the-clock availability. Students rated AI's speed advantage at 6.65 out of 10, noting that academic stress doesn't follow a 9-to-5 schedule — and neither should support.
AI and human advisors are stronger together
Students aren't looking to replace their advisors — they want more quality time with them. The vision that emerged from our survey is a hybrid model: AI handles routine questions, deadline reminders, credit checks, and scheduling, while human advisors focus on complex planning, personal challenges, and meaningful mentorship. More than 60% of institutions are already moving in this direction, and students are ready for it.
AI could reduce anxiety and increase engagement
One of the most striking findings: 62% of students said they would turn to AI to ask questions they'd hesitate to bring to a human advisor. Students rated AI's ability to reduce advising-related anxiety at 6.17 out of 10, and many described the appeal of a judgment-free space to ask "stupid questions." International students showed an even stronger preference for AI-driven support. The implication for retention is significant — if AI lowers the barrier to seeking help, more students will actually use the services available to them.
