I'm a junior and I have a decent profile and I want to go into history maybe become a professor, journalist, or a politician and I'm kinda torn. Rutgers seems like a really nice school for me It's not extremely expensive, the perfect major (history/political science), and seems like it'll fit my vibe. The only thing though is I hear Rutgers doesn't have much prestige. So do I go to Rutgers or to a school that has more prestige (like Boston University). I feel like I would love Rutgers but I don't want to mess up my career path just because I didn't go to a more prestigious school.
I recommend you read the book "Where you go is not who you will be ..." By Frank Bruni. It has a lot of statistics related to the question you are asking. Best of luck!
Fit and financial safety in a school are so much more important than prestige. The most prestige will do is cause you to get more attention when a future employer sees your resume.
However, you most CERTAINLY will not "mess up your career path" if you go to Rutgers. It is a great school and will offer you an amazing education.
If you genuinely think you will be happier at Rutgers, PLUS it will be cheaper, than it sounds like the perfect fit for you! Trust me, many, many employers don't care that much about where you went to school, as long as you're qualified.
